Baby John in safe hands
Baby John in safe hands

John wasn’t his real name… When he was brought to the Kids Alive Zambia (KAZ) Lilato Children’s Home, he was emaciated, stunted, unable to walk. He suffered from infected boils and a painful hernia. Estimating his age to be perhaps 18 months, they named him ‘Baby John’.

Investigations finally uncovered one distant relative who knew about John’s mother. She had travelled from town to town, surviving by doing things most of us would never consider. She often left the baby alone, and compassionate neighbours would occasionally offer him scraps of food. Then one day, his mother abandoned him for good. A mere 3-year old – as we finally discovered! Why? We’ll never know what desperate helplessness and hopelessness had overtaken her.

And so it was, after exhausting all other options, that social services and the court released the child into KAZ’s care and Baby John finally had a home at Lilato!  Now, 8 months on, after careful nutrition and medical care, backed by focused prayer, John has completely regained his physical health.

John now runs and dances with his peers, plays on the swings and has endeared himself to all the staff and children at Lilato. Best of all, he wakes each morning and goes to sleep each night assured that he has inestimable value in the eyes of the God who created him, the Father who will never forsake him.

It's urgent work, rescuing orphans and at-risk children, giving them a voice, showing them God's love and seeing them as He sees them. It takes God's people partnering with God to see needs being met and kids on the road to whole, independent and joyful adulthood. But it is so rewarding to see these children eventually become God’s instruments of hope and healing for others!
