Babies in Prison
In Zambia, when a mother is sentenced to prison and she has a child aged 4 or under, the child will often go with her. As conditions are notoriously bad, our programme provides practical, spiritual and emotional support for both mother and child, while advocating for reform.
Some of the things we do
- Each quarter we provide care boxes to the mums including crucial hygiene products and nutritious baby/toddler food, as well as care plans for each child.
- Our loving case workers work closely with the mum and her wider family outside of prison, especially vulnerable older siblings.
- We partner with Zambia’s Prison Chaplaincy Service to bring spiritual care and support to the mums (and other inmates).
- This includes holding in-prison services and events.
- We also work with a range of key Zambian stakeholders and authorities to advocate for systems reform, including having just one prison for incarcerated children, equipped and set up for child care.
- We create public awareness for incarcerated children and generate support for systems change.

When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?
