PRAY FOR PERU

Peru is located on the west side of South America and is an immensely biodiverse country.

31.5 million people reside in Peru, 76% of whom live in urban areas; it is the fourth most populous country in South America.

Kids Alive International and Kids Alive is hard at work near the capital city of Lima in our Juniper Tree Children’s Home. This residential facility provides family-style homes for over 20 at-risk children and offers care, education, and the knowledge of hope in Christ as Saviour.

In Manchay, our care centre and school are providing children with education, meals, Bible lessons, basic health care, and early childhood skills for younger at-risk children.

Things to know:

  • There are over 3,000 different varieties of Potato grown in Peru
  • The potato is originally from Peru, and there are over 3,000 different varieties. Proud Peruvians use the phrase “Soy mas Peruano que la papa” (I am more Peruvian than the potato).
  • Three-quarters of the world’s alpaca population lives in Peru.
  • Spanish is spoken by 84% of the population
  • Over 80% of the population identify as Roman Catholic
  • Almost 70% of Peruvian women report some form of physical abuse

Manchay Oasis School and Care Centre

Manchay Oasis Care Centre opened in 2003 to help poverty-stricken mothers of Manchay with their young children. Many of these mothers are not married, and while they often do their best to provide, malnourishment and neglect are rampant.

Homes in this city are often one or two-roomed cardboard or tin shacks with dirt floors and no electricity, running water or sanitation.

The number of needy children continues to grow each year. Many children come to our preschool programme where they receive a meal each day and learn skills. Older children come before or after school and receive a meal and get help with their homework.

We offer basic health services as well as counselling for those who have been through traumatic experiences.

Our Keeping Families Together programme provides single mums with training and support in developing a small business.

When we met Diego* and Sofia*, their situation was heart breaking. In 2011, their father had died of appendicitis, leaving their mother to care for five children with no resources. They arrived in Lima, coming from a remote area, and lived in one of the poorest areas of Lima, up in the mountains and barely surviving. But God had a plan for this precious family!

Their mother attended a prenatal class where she was first introduced to the Gospel, eventually accepting Jesus as her Saviour. Not long after, a family member told her about the ministry at Manchay Oasis, and that is when we met Diego and Sofia.

Though they arrived with nothing but the clothes of their back and in poor health, they have both improved their health and their school work. Stories like theirs highlight how we not only reach out to the kids but also the parents.

We know that reaching the hearts of primary caregivers can have a dramatic impact on a family, bringing hope in the bleakest of circumstances.

To support children like Diego and Sofia, please donate today and subscribe to our mailing list to keep updated on our children, projects, events and fundraising.

How can you pray for Peru this month?

Week one:

That God will bless the development of our therapeutic programmes, and that He will bless the relationships between kids and counsellors, breaking down the walls and building trust.

Week two:

Staff who are undergoing Trauma-Competent Caregiver Training, that they will assimilate all they are learning and apply it with wisdom in the lives of our kids.

Week three:

Healing, both emotional spiritual, for our girls at the House of Glory, and for wisdom for the staff as they meet the needs of these mums and their babies

Week four:

For the emotional, spiritual, and relational needs of our staff and missionary families, that they will grow in their walk with God and know him intimately.

“Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the One who sent me” Mark 9:37
